This past June, the Composites Innovation Centre (CIC), represented by our FibreCITY team, attended the JEC Americas Composites Show and Conference in Houston, Texas. The team showcased the CIC’s innovative composite and biocomposite technologies, created connections and learned about other technology developments and opportunities in the natural fibre industry.
Simon Potter, VP of Product Innovation and FibreCITY at the CIC, hosted a speaker session on natural fibres and their potential to replace other fibre types in the long term. He presented on the work the FibreCITY team is doing and the latest technologies and developments including the characterization of surface properties, fibre-to-resin interface and mechanical properties. The session also included presentations from FibreCITY collaborators on topics such as:
- North American linen flax fibre composite performance based on different fibre pre-processing techniques
- An automatic imaging flax fibre analyzer
- Inverse gas chromatography as a novel technique to characterize natural fibre surface properties
- The influence of chemical structure on the mechanical properties and morphology of fibres
The CIC was also awarded the 2015 Innovation Award in the Biocomposites category for the team’s work with the FibreCITY initiative. The Innovation Award Program is a long-standing program that began in 1998 as a way to recognize excellence in composite innovations.
“Congratulations to the team for the Innovation Award,” said Terry McGrath, JEC Americas Account Manager. “We are so proud to have supporters like the CIC and with folks like the CIC we know the future of composites is going to be much stronger.”
Other participants at the conference included key players from all over the world such as Europe, USA, and Asia. This was an opportunity to grow the CIC’s, and FibreCITY’s, reputation as a hub for the latest technologies in composites and an organization that is continually growing its capabilities.
